PERSONALITY
Generally of a calm and pensive demeanour.
Focused and hard-working when she's in the studio or on stage.
Laughter doesn't come easily to her, but she's hiding a sweet sense of humour beneath all the seriousness.
Two things have shaped Aki's personality, almost in equal measure, ballet and her family. However, throughout her childhood and youth, these two aspects of her life have continued to battle for dominance over her and although it might seem that the winner would eventually be ballet, nothing's so simple. Her parents own a summer residence in Hokkaido where the family has spent their vacations as long as Aki can remember - and as long as she can remember, she has always had to prioritize ballet over these family vacations, in order to better herself, learn new variations, attend new competitions and participate in new performances. After she began dancing in earnest from she was ten years and onward, she's only joined her parents and sister for a rare few trips to the island. Ballet taught her to steel herself, the importance of perseverance and hard work, but it also taught her the absence of her loved ones, to endure distance and loss. In many ways, ballet has made Aki a very strong person and in even more ways, its consequences have crippled her emotionally, so that she finds romantic relationships difficult to navigate now, although she still tries her best, again and again and again.
As a result of this sort of family life, Aki is probably closer to her ballet teacher through a decade, former Tokyo Ballet principal dancer, Shizuka Satou, than to her parents. Satou-san, as she calls her, has taught Aki everything that she knows and prepared her for the life of a professional ballerina. Due to the nature of their relationship, her parental role in Aki's life, Satou-san was the first person whom Aki ever told about her interest in other girls and although her teacher warned her to be discreet, she didn't shun her and her reaction made Aki feel hopeful that perhaps her parents wouldn't either.
Although her relationship to her parents is complicated, Aki's relationship to her older sister, Natsumi, four years her senior, is very straightforward, loving and genuine. Having spent so much time apart, Aki still feels as if they've never been away from each other whenever they spend time together and after she came out to her family, she no longer keeps anything from her sister. Natsumi is the only member of Aki's family whom she can tell about her dating woes and romantic problems, something Aki is very relieved about. As such Natsumi functions as the last remaining link between Aki and their parents.
In many ways, as much as Aki wishes that she lived closer to her family, she has become estranged from her parents and has been so for many years already. When she was still in school, she was a good and hard-working student who loved literature and poetry, something that her parents weren't late to encourage and seemed to fully understand, but as it became more and more obvious that Aki's passion was for ballet more than anything else, her parents slowly withdrew from her life, leaving her to make the final choice on her own.
A state she's been in ever since.
HISTORY
Born in Japan, where she started attending ballet lessons at age five, Aki showcased real talent from early on and was able to participate in several major competitions both nationally and internationally throughout her teens. Eventually she earned a partially paid apprentice position at the Royal Ballet in London, but was never offered a contract as a corps dancer there, instead she auditioned for the English National Ballet where she worked for a few seasons, before being headhunted by Valdemar Vinther for his new company in Aarhus. Now she's trying to find her feet in Denmark.
Aki's family is extraordinarily ordinary, her parents are happily married and run a large-scale luxury hotel business together (Himura Lodgings), her father, Haruki, as the CEO of the chain and her mother, Mai, as manager of their main location in downtown Tokyo. Aki's older sister, Natsumi, originally studied to become a banker, but is now working as the chief accountant of their parents' business. Although Aki has travelled a lot on her own and lived alone for some years in the UK, she still feels close to her family and misses them greatly in her everyday life. They talk over Skype on a regular basis.
When she was still a teenager, Aki discovered that she was attracted to girls, but kept it a secret until she moved to London and could live more freely. From a safe distance, she came out to her family by old-fashioned letter and although they've taken it well overall, she can tell that especially her mother is disappointed that her youngest daughter will never marry a man. Although they haven't shunned her by any means, her sexuality is not a topic that is touched upon voluntarily either and Aki's ventures into dating go by if not unnoticed, then unacknowledged.
